Version 2.0.3 released Mar 27, 2011
Requires Mac OS X 10.6.x; Rosetta
Compatible with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

Version History

2.0.3 (released Mar 27, 2011)

  • Fixed a compile bug that prevented Menu Master from loading in PowerPC applications (like Word 2004).

2.0.2 (released Mar 21, 2011)

  • Addresses a problem that caused the AirPort menu in the menu bar to insist you had no AirPort Card installed despite the fact you did (this bug did not affect the ability to join a previously joined network, it just wouldn't show the status). You must log out and back into Mac OS X to see this fix.
  • Addressed an issue that led to some crashes when using the silly menu animation effect. It would occur immediately after closing a menu blessed with the silly effect.
  • Ned is back, yay!
  • Addressed a crash with Skype 5.0. Seems Skype 5.0 is expecting A to happen before B but no documentation has ever given them the letters A and B, let alone any order. So now Menu Master just doesn't do anything to trigger A at all. Custom keyboard shortcuts should still work in Skype even with this change. The triggering of A was only necessary in Skype 2.8 (the previous version) anwyho.
  • Because this took so long, we are giving everyone a 46% discount on all our software until March 31th, 2011 or until supplies run out, whichever occurs first. How can an intangible object run out of stock? I don't know, ask Microsoft! I miss Ned so much. Just use coupon code NEVER-GONNA-BE-ON-MAS when checking out. Final discounted price is shown right before purchase. Do not combine with lower discounts.
  • Yay, Menu Master is almost 8 years old! I feel old!

2.0.1 (released Oct 28, 2010)

  • Menu Master is proudly made and maligned with 64-bit Carbon.
  • With the help of Bare Bones (barebones.com), fixed an issue in which Menu Master could cause a hang in BBEdit 9.6 under certain user configurations.
  • Silly Effect is no longer on by default. Please turn it on at least once to see if it suits you.
  • Made it easier to blame Menu Master if an application crashes for whatever reason.

2.0 (released Oct 25, 2010)

  • This upgrade is not free. This release implements a new URU (Unsanity Registration Updater). If you bought Menu Master on or after August 28th, 2009, this upgrade is free. If you bought Menu Master before August 28th, 2009 and you have a previously valid serial number, you will be given a 33% coupon if you wish to update. Your currently valid code will continue to work with older releases of Menu Master.
  • All of this is done through URU. URU presents itself if needed when you open the Menu Master Preference Pane. It's all very straight forward and we hope you enjoy the action. More information about this process can be found in the URU FAQ.
  • Now requires Mac OS X 10.6.x.
  • You may have to restart after installing Menu Master for the first time.
  • Updated to support Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard v10.6.x
  • Now supports only Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard v10.6.x
  • Adds support for 64-bit processes (x86_64 only, ppc64 is not supported)
  • Requires Rosetta. If Rosetta is not installed, Mac OS X 10.6.x will offer to install the 4MB Rosetta package during install.
  • Menu Master is proudly made and maligned with 64-bit Carbon.
  • Rewrote code that used to use deprecated APIs and that have replacements in Mac OS X 10.6. Sometimes this changed 50 lines of code into 2-5 lines of code. Sometimes this changed one function call into 30 lines of code, depending on how much logic had to be rewritten.
  • Some APIs used by Menu Master but not deprecated, with no replacement, but not available in 64-bit were changed to their much more verbose APIs that are in 64-bit. The code, in this case, used at least five times more lines of code than the old APIs used.
  • If you have custom shortcuts set with an application that has changed significantly concerning menus in Mac OS X 10.6 compared to Mac OS X 10.5, it is best to restore all shortcuts for the application in the Menu Master preference pane and then re-customize the custom shortcuts in the application.
  • Rewrote code that wasn't deprecated, but had much better replacement APIs with less bugs and more CFTypeRef goodness.
  • Menu Accelerator has been temporarily removed for this version. It will be back.
  • There is a new feature called Silly Effect. Silly Effect puts a Quartz Composer document animation in the background of a menu. There is a sample Quartz Composer document that leverages the contents of the currently opened menu in Library/Application Support/Unsanity/Menu Master/.
  • There is now a prefpane tab dedicated to the Silly Effect. It allows you to disable or enable Quartz Composer Documents individually. All Screen Savers are disable by default as most are not suited for menus. If you disagree, turn it on.
  • Got permission to include Mamoru Kano's (www.zugakousaku.com) excellent Quartz Composer documents. They are just astoundingly beautiful and awe inspiring. There is no adequate way to express how grateful we are for this.
  • If you have a Mac than can switch between GPUs without logging out of Mac OS X, Silly Effect may cause a switch to the discrete GPU. There's really not much to say about this unless you are running on battery power and plan to not visit any flash sites or use any applications with their own cheesy animation effects (such as Skype or Tweetie). When one application switches GPUs all applications switch GPUs.
  • Silly Effect animations use no CPU when the animations are not visible and a very small amount of processing power when they are visible.
  • Silly Effect does not work and is disabled for garbage collected applications (Xcode, System Preferences in 64-bit) and applications running under Rosetta (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). These facts make me a sad panda.

1.4.3 (released Aug 26, 2008)

  • Note: The price of Menu Master has increased from $10 to $12.
  • This is a free update.
  • Potentially addressed an issue with the Script Menu Menu Extra if you have different items that only appeared when a specific application was frontmost.
  • Added support for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard v10.5 and later.
  • Dropped support for Mac OS X 10.3 Panther. Menu Master now requires Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger v10.4.11 or later.
  • No longer loads Objective-C dynamically.
  • Removed calls to many deprecated APIs.
  • No longer scans menu items if their titles are NULL or zero length due to an issue cause by the inefficiency of Cocoa menus.
  • Potentially addressed an issue with Adobe applications losing custom menu shortcuts when switching documents or not listing all their menu items in the Menu Accelerator window. This required a lot more work than it should have.
  • Includes APE 2.5.
  • Includes SCR 1.5.
  • Plea: If you've bought Menu Master around three years ago and have never paid for it again (we've not charged for an update of Menu Master) we kindly ask if you wouldn't mind paying a voluntary upgrade fee. This fee is completely voluntary, is not required, and Menu Master itself has no knowledge of whether you have volunteered or not. There are no perks to volunteer and we only ask that only registered users volunteer. To volunteer, please go to http://www.unsanity.com/store/add/menumaster_vuf
